Warden Whitford

Warden Henry Whitford, 83, Granite City, IL, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at his residence. The funeral will be held at 11:00 am Monday at Anglin Funeral Home with Rev. Melvin Dunaway and Rev. Bob Ferris officiating. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery, with military honors. Visitation will be from 5:00 -8:00 pm Sunday at Anglin Funeral Home. Anglin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born March 31, 1927 in Dover, Tennessee, son of the late Henry Walden and Abby Elizabeth (Young) Whitford. He married Savannah Pearl (Fitzhugh) Whitford on December 3, 1952 in Philadelphia, Mississippi and she survives. He had worked at Union Starch in Granite City with over 20 years of dedicated service and for 7 years at Laclede Steel in Alton. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during World War II. He enjoyed his days of working on old cars and working and building around his home. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by five daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Gail Dunaway of Dover, Tennessee, Gerline “Jean” Cottrell of Granite City, Sharon Kay and Reverend Bob Ferris of Farmington, Missouri, Karen Whitford of Granite City and Carol and Steve Jamboretz of Granite City; one son, Randy Whitford Sr. of Granite City; fourteen grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; other many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandsons; one great grandson; one son-in-law, James Elroy Dunaway; five brothers, Gordon, Clarence, Paul, Elmore and William Whitford and four sisters, Carlene Brandon, Diphine Whitford, Ruby Rowlett and Liddy Margaret Whitford. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and may be accepted at the funeral home.
