Thurston Smith

Thurston L. Smith, 74, Dover, died Monday, May 17, 2010, at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, TN. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 2904 Hwy 79, Indian Mound, TN 37079 with Rev. Melvin Dunaway officiating. Burial will be in Smith Austin Wallace Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 pm Wednesday and from 11:00 am until the hour of service Thursday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Anglin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Thurston was born October 15, 1935 in Indian Mound, TN son of the late Alvin "Pete" and Beulah Norfleet Smith. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was retired from Acme Boot Co. and also from United Rubber/Steel Workers of America. He was Stewart County Commissioner for Dist. 2. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Stewart Co. Historical Society, Kiwanis Club, board member of the North Stewart Water District, Child Advocacy Committee, board member of Stewart County Fire Department, and chairman of Stewart County Democratic Party. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Aaron Smith, Raymond Smith, William "Bill" Smith, and George "Peewee" Elliott. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Marie Atkins Smith; children, Mike and Beverly Fussell, Spring Hill, TN, Wayne and Debbie Austin, and his pride and joy, grandson, Lee Austin, Dover, TN. He is also survived by his brother, James Smith and sister, Mary Smith, both of Indian Mound, and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Tim Dunaway, Monte Foreman, Mickey Atkins, Barry Smith, Billy Smith, Terry Smith, Donnie Elliott and Dennis Elliott. Honorary pallbearers will be Rick Joiner, Carlos Lewis, John Elliott, Rep. Willie "Butch" Borchert, Sen. Roy Herron, Bobby Rorie, and the deacons of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Rev. Melvin Dunaway, 1631 Old Hwy 79, Dover, TN 37058.
