Melvin Dunaway

July 13, 1937 — June 29, 2025

Dover

Melvin L. Dunaway, 87, went home to be with Jesus Sunday morning, June 29, 2025. He passed on peacefully and restfully in his sleep at his residence in Dover, Tennessee.

Melvin was born July 13, 1937 in Dover to James L. and Rosa Dunaway. He is preceded in death by his father, his mother, a brother, Elroy Dunaway, a baby sister who passed at birth, and a nephew, Ricky Dunaway.

After school, he served in the United States Army. After being honorably discharged, he was a supervisor at Ely & Walker, Acme Boot, Osh-Kosh, and at Stetson boot, where he retired in 2002. He always enjoyed working with people and he especially enjoyed the opportunity it gave him to live out his calling as minister of the gospel on a daily basis. His ‘life calling’ was being a pastor at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Indian Mound, TN, where he served faithfully for 45 years, stepping down in 2019 due to health issues.

It could truly be said that the important thing in his life were faith, family, and friends, in that order.

He will be missed by his wife of 54 years, Lucille Atkins Dunaway, his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Joy, his grandchildren, Katie, Kaleb, and Josh, his sister Helen Dunaway Smith, by a multitude of other friends and family, and by countless others who were impacted by his rock-solid faith and love in their lives.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 beginning at 3:00pm until 7:00 pm at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will resume on July 3, 2025 at 10:00 am and continue until the funeral service at 11:00 am with Bro. Joe Shannon officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Perry Robertson, Dotson Luffman, Ricky Kirkland, Mitchell Burkhart, Cody Burkhart, and Neil Wallace. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Indian Mound, TN with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Melvin’s memory to, Angels on Duty, 1104 Old Highway 79, Dover, TN 37058 or Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 2904 US-79, Indian Mound, TN 37079.
