Larry Mathis

Mr. Larry Dean Mathis, age 83 of Big Rock, TN went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born January 30, 1941 in Dover, TN son of the late James W. Mathis and Cynthia R. Taylor Mathis.

Larry was a 50-year member and deacon at Big Rock Baptist Church and was recently honored as a Deacon Emeritus. He was a member of Lineport Masonic Lodge #207. Larry was instrumental in founding Stewart County Fire Rescue and served as a first responder for many years. He retired after 27 years of service from Trane Co. Many will fondly remember him for his food stands, where he sold fresh flowers, vegetables, and homemade fresh sausage.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 62 years, Mable Marie (Hamm) Mathis; children, Benjamin Mathis, Deanna Thompson, and Dianna Feltner (Jeff); grandchildren, Mitchell Howell (Emily), Daniel Howell (Chelsea), Ryan Feltner (Kellery), Katherine Earhart (Ryan), Hannah Feltner, and Roxanne Perkins (Josh); 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Roland Mathis and sister, Ollie Bryant.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, James W. Mathis, Jr., Glindon Mathis, Luther H. Mathis, and Annie Yarbrough.

Visitation for Mr. Mathis will be Monday, March 25, 2024 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Anglin Funeral Home and will continue on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 from 10:00 -11:00 am. The funeral service will be at 11:00 am at Anglin Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Whitehead officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his fellow deacons: Rick Joiner, John Gerkin, Michael Wallace, Pat Donahue, James Andrews, David Bumpus, and William Taylor.
