James Haskell Bumpus, age 89 of Big Rock, TN passed away Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Manor House of Dover. Funeral service will be on Monday, May 21st at 11:00 AM, at Anglin Funeral Home, Dover, TN, with Rev. David Whitehead officiating. Burial will be at Smith Cemetery in Big Rock. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 20, 4-8 PM and again on Monday prior to the service at the funeral home. Haskell was born June 3, 1922 at Indian Mound, TN, son of the late Andrew Haskell and Eloise Tippit Bumpus. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia and a sister, Josephine Bumpus Lewis. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Alberta Kennada Bumpus and four children, David Bumpus (RoseMary) of Big Rock, Kenny Bumpus (Georgia) of Big Rock, Sheila Bumpus Wheat (Weldon) of Franklin, TN and Andy Bumpus (Betsy) of Sikeston, MO; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and four siblings, Ruth Bumpus Tucker Butts of Clarksville, Goldie Augusta (Gustie) Bumpus Darr of Crossville, Gordon Browning Bumpus of Indian Mound, and Henry Donald Bumpus of Woodlawn. Haskell is also survived by Rick (Marcia) Joiner of Big Rock who is loved like a son. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers while great grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers. Haskell was a longtime member of Big Rock Baptist Church, serving as bus driver, nail driver, deacon, choir member and Sunday School Teacher. He was active in the Stewart County Fire Services and the American Legion. He was an avid builder and spent many years as a self-employed carpenter. Always ready with a story to tell, Haskell spent countless hours speaking to high school history classes, civic events and patriotic celebrations about his service in the Burma Jungles with Merrill’s Marauders.
