Deon Adair Raab Burgess, a talented dancer whose graceful presence lit up the silver screen in several iconic Elvis Presley films, passed away on May 28, 2025, at age 85. Known for her vibrant performances and warm spirit, Deon brought joy to audiences during a golden era of American film and music.
Deon was born in Los Angeles, CA on May 27, 1940, to Herbert Leith and Cleo (Miller) Raab (later Cleo Messick). Her father passed away when she was seven. She discovered her passion for dance at a young age. Her dedication and talent led her to working in the film industry. She is best known for her appearances (as Deon Robb Burgess) in Blue Hawaii (1961), Viva Las Vegas (1964), and Kissin’ Cousins (1964). She participated in many Hollywood films, but at the time dancers and ensemble performers were often uncredited, especially in large musicals. In addition to her credited appearances, her family recalls that she worked in Las Vegas in the late ’50s; appeared in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959), The Ladies Man (1961), and The Music Man (1962); she served as Donald O’Connor’s practice dance partner; and she worked with Sammy Davis, Jr.
Deon married singer, songwriter, and producer Dave Burgess on May 17, 1959. Together they adopted two children, David Leith Burgess and Charmaine Adair Burgess.
They left Hollywood in the early ’70s and moved to Montana, where they ran an art gallery that featured Western and Native American art. After several years in Montana, they moved to Nashville, TN and Dave returned to his career in music.
Deon was also an accomplished painter. She held several shows during her career, and her paintings are cherished by her family, friends, and those lucky enough to purchase them. Deon was admired for her warmth, elegance, and generosity of spirit. She supported her husband’s career and cherished her family, friends, and the creative community that surrounded her. She was a masterful cook and made every celebration special with her own unique touch that will never be duplicated.
Deon was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Charmaine.
She leaves behind her husband and her beloved son David and his wife, Joy Carrico.
In keeping with her wishes, she will be cremated. A celebration of Deon’s life where friends and family will gather to honor her life and legacy will be held at a later date.
Deon Adair Raab Burgess danced through life with grace, leaving behind memories that continue to shine as brightly as the spotlight she once stood in.
