Carlton was born December 13, 1952 to the late Wren and Onie Marie Clark. His father Wren was an Army veteran, and his mother, Onie Marie, was a homemaker who came from a large family (the Cole’s) and spent her life as a caregiver. Carlton graduated from Stewart County High School class of 1970. In 1985, he married Paula Jean Adams. Paula had two children from a previous marriage, Matthew & Michelle, both of whom Carlton loved and called his own.
They had their only natural-born child, Cheryl, in 1987, and tended to their longtime home on Pumpkin Ridge for 27 years, until they moved to the present home on Long Creek in 2015.
Carlton was a Dover native who was beloved by the community and is remembered for his honesty, humorous temperament, as well as his compassionate nature.
He was a lifelong laborer who prided himself in hard work and providing for his family. Carlton was employed by the Stewart County Highway Department for 30 years, retiring in late 2018. He put his life on the line, fighting the elements of nature—floods, downed trees, and even tornadoes, but he took it all in stride. Anything to provide for his family.
Carlton enjoyed fishing, watching Westerns, sitting on a porch swing on cool summer nights, and listening to a good sermon. He gave his life to Jesus the summer of 2019 and enjoyed attending church with his wife, Paula.
Carlton is survived by his beloved wife Paula Clark, brother James Clark of Lebanon, TN, three children: Cheryl Clark of Huntingdon, TN, Matthew Ulickey of Grayson, KY, and Michelle Honeycutt of Jonesborough, TN, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Joan Clark.
