Joseph Dwight Bertrand, 84, passed away of natural causes at his home in Bumpus Mills, Tennessee on October 30, 2021. Joe was born in Hammond, Indiana on February 19, 1937.
He was preceded in death by his parents Julian Patrick Bertrand and Doris Irene Eaton Bertrand and his sister Marcia Irene Bertrand Crouch.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Delores J. Spetter Bertrand of Dyer, Indiana/Paia, Hawaii; their daughter, Cheryl A. (Keone) Kali of Paia, Hawaii; son, Joseph T. (Lucia) Bertrand of Dyer, Indiana; grandson, Timothy J. Booth of Paia, Hawaii, granddaughter, Madalyne F. (Jacob Evans) Booth of Austin, Texas; grandson, Cody J. Bertrand of Dyer, Indiana; and great granddaughter, Gypsy Pilina’epakamakani Ann Marie Evans of Austin, Texas.
Joe joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Topeka, Kansas where he met Delores. They were married in 1961 and moved to Lansing, Illinois. Joe worked in the printing industry, most notably starting the Compass Newspaper which covered northern Indiana and won many awards for its reporting. Joe retired in 1996 and he and Delores, moved to Bumpus Mills. Joe loved his home on Lake Barkley and the many hours fishing with his friends and family. He was very involved in supporting his Loon Bay community and served as their Water Quality Engineer. Joe was also an active member of the Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Dover.
On November 4, 2021, a funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am and Luncheon at 12:00pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1489 Donelson Pkwy, Dover, Tennessee with Father Joseph Mundakal officiating.
Joe’s ashes will be laid to rest at Fowler Cemetery, 465 W Division Road, Fowler, Benton County, Indiana along with a celebration of Life. Date TBD - Windler Funeral Home in Fowler.
